Sheryl Spencer is an artist working in fiber and printmaking. Her artistic practice explores themes of femininity, inherited expectations, personal reflection and introspection, in combination with the concept of a numinous object. Often through depictions of weathered scenes, overlooked and overgrown sites, Spencer creates iterations of scenes and moments where material, memory, and self become entangled with surroundings and objects that returned a gaze, and presented an imbued spirit. Through tactile processes incorporating combinations of printmaking, fiber, and stitching, her work reflects on mending and repair, and emotional labour. Through the lens of melancholy, Spencer engages with melancholy as a meaningful space for attention to self-compassion, awareness, and becoming.
